Big Tex, that gap in the lip is supposed to be there - it's to direct the overflowing coolant. The cap is designed to let air/coolant out if the pressure inside gets above 16psi (as per written on the cap). I would definitely flush the cooling system, replace the thermostat, and clean out any debris between the radiator and condensor coils.

Pushing coolant is almost always a lifted head but can try replacing the overflow cap first since you said it had no pressure in the system after sitting. Not sure why your coolant would be cold if it was overheating and you've been driving it and you said you replaced t stats recently.

Try burping the radiator to remove possible trapped air in the system. Park on a slope, hood uphill. With the motor running, slowly open the radiator cap just enough to let the air out. Use a towel, don't burn yourself. After you do that a few times top it off with fresh fluid.
